Excavations in the Caracol site core have involved numerous small test excavations in Maya residential groups as well as the investigation of some 100 tombs. However, some of the oulaying residential groups have seen very intensive investigation. Excavations have also been carried out in a dozen chultuns, or man-made underground chambers. The plaza termini of three of Caracol’s shorter causeways have additionally seen limited excavation.
